Two consortiums made of international and local port operators compete for the concession of the fourth container terminal of the future Tangiers-Med II port, which is an extension of the Tangiers-Med port.
According to Moroccan MAP agency, the groups that have presented their offers after the publication of the tender by the Tangiers-Mediterranean Special Agency (TMSA) last July are: the consortium made of APM Terminals B.V. (the Netherlands) and Morocco’s leading energy company Akwa, and the consortium made of Singapore’s PSA and the Moroccan groups Marsa Maroc and SNI.
TMSA will choose the winner of the concession of the terminal, which has a capacity of two million containers, in the second quarter of 2008.
The concession of terminal 3, which will have a capacity of three million containers, will also be awarded in the same period and the competition is between the group made of the shipping companies CMA-CGM (France) and MSC (Switzerland), on the one hand, and Danish Maersk Line on the other.
Terminals 3 and 4, both to be located within the future Tangiers-Med II port, are added up to the container terminals 1 and 2 located in the area of the first port Tangiers-Med.
The first port is operational since July 27, 2007, while the second one will start operation in the summer.
With a total capacity of over eight million containers, the Tangiers-Mediterranean port complex will be among the largest container transport platforms in the world and thanks to its strategic position at the gates of the Strait of Gibraltar it will become the number one platform for the exchange between Africa and Europe.
