Between January and May, the agricultural sector was the only economic sector in Peru to have increased its exports. Fruit exports achieved the best performance with a 11.6% increase.
Mincetur, the Ministry of Foreign Trade, announced that Peru's agricultural exports amounted to $2,403 million for the period January to May, up 0.8% from the previous year. Fruit exports amounted to $1,414 million, or + 11.6% compared to 2019 (1,267 million). New historical record for this period.
This performance can be explained by the growth in grapes sales ($451 million, or + 26.5%), mangoes ($329 million, or + 26.8%) and avocados (328 million, or +7,1%). Excellent result also for citrus exports ($62 million USD, or + 41%), mainly mandarins ($54 million USD, or + 50%).
The main destinations for Peruvian fruits are the United States (40%) and the European Union (38%). Sales to these destinations increased by 8% and 18% respectively.
According to the ministry, Peru's goal is to become one of the top 10 fruit exporters in the world and the 3rd in Latin America. Currently, the country is among the top 15 in the world and the 4th in Latin America.
