The Directorate-General for Agriculture of the European Commission has published its latest data on the tomato sector (production, trade, etc.) in its "Dashboard" newsletter.
According to the newsletter, Italy remains the main European producer, with just over 5 million tonnes including tomatoes intended for industry. Then follow Spain with 5 million tonnes and the other countries analyzed, Portugal, Greece, France and Romania, whose production is around 1 million tonnes. Regarding the production of tomatoes intended for fresh consumption, Spain occupies the 1st place with around 2 million tonnes, followed by the Netherlands with around 900,000 tonnes.
Regarding tomato imports from third countries, information shows a sharp increase in imports of fresh tomatoes from Morocco over the last 9 seasons, reaching almost 500,000 tonnes in 2019 (486,878 tonnes), which represents by far the largest share of imports (71% in 2019).
For tomato exports from the European Union to the main third countries, since October 2019 until June 2020: Switzerland is No. 1 with a volume of 88,649 tonnes exported, followed by Norway with over 27,000 tonnes, Belarus with 14,333 tonnes and Ukraine with 6,712 tonnes.
According to the report, the average exit prices of producer organizations registered by the Commission in the main producer countries, namely Spain, Italy, France and the Netherlands, show overall a decrease compared to the previous season.
