The School Milk Program distributed 285,000 tonnes of milk products to 18 million children, making a total of 30.2 million children who benefited from these distributions of fruits, vegetables and milk.
During the 2016-17 school year, more than 12.2 million children in 79,000 schools benefited from the EU's 'Fruit and Vegetables in Schools' program. More than 74,000 tonnes of fruits and vegetables were distributed, mainly to children aged 6 to 10 years old.
In addition to the distribution of these products, the EU School Agenda promotes healthy eating habits among children and includes targeted educational programs explaining the importance of good nutrition and how food is produced.
For this 2016-17 school year, apples were the most widely distributed fruit, with pears, plums, peaches and nectarines, oranges, strawberries and bananas. Carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers were the most popular vegetables.
The national envelopes of the 28 Member States participating in the program for the 2018-19 academic year have been approved and should be adopted by the European Commission by the end of March.
