2% decline in apple production in the campaign 2021/22
VU
In the campaign 2021/22, apple production in Argentina is estimated at 548.800 tons, down by only 2% compared to the previous season, according to the GAIN report from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The slight decrease is due to the normal lighter production season of the plant's life cycle, after last season’s heavy blossom.
The main apple varieties produced in Argentina are Red Delicious, Granny Smith, Gala, and Cripps Pink, according to SENASA.
Exports
In the campaign 2021/22, Argentine apple exports are estimated at 93.100 tons, while in the previous campaign the country exported 95.000 tons of the fruit. Among the factors that led to the decrease are high inflation rates, relatively steep production costs, and high international freight cost, which has doubled due to lower container availability worldwide.
During the first part of the campaign, Argentine apple exports are destined mainly to the European Union and the United States, while in the latter part of the campaign, supplies are oriented toward Mercosur countries (mainly to Brazil) and other Latin American countries. Exports to Russia, previously the second largest importer of Argentine apples, were canceled due to the war in Ukraine in the beginning of this year.
