Onion production in season 2012/2013 is 30% lower than the previous one

The Committee of the onion sector, reunited by FEPEX, includes the producers of Comunidad Valenciana, Catalonia and Castilla-La Mancha, the main producing regions of Spain.

For the current season, 2012/2013 ending in April, the production is 30% lower than the previous one. This reduction should result in a price increase that hasn't occurred. The prices are just higher than the campaign 2011/2012, which was considered very negative.

Onion crops occupied 21,911 hectares in 2012, consumption in Spain amounted to 291,002,000 kilos. Exports until October 2012 reached 211,662 tonnes, an increase of 2% compared to the same period in 2011 for a value of € 174.3 million (+26%). Spain is the second largest exporter of onions in the EU, behind the Netherlands.
