The decline in mango exports is temporary. The objective for this season of 200,000 tonnes exported is maintained.
The expected drop in production has led to a drop in exports but recent rains predict a recovery for the remainder of the season in volumes shipped.
Juan Carlos Rivera Ortega, the director of APEM (Asociación Peruana de Productores y Exportadores de Mango) reported that from October 12 to November 29 of this year, 4,900 tonnes of fresh mangoes were exported. This represents a contraction of 34.7% compared to the 7,500 tonnes exported during the same period of the 2019/20 campaign.
This situation reflects the productivity forecast for this season. We knew in advance that production would drop compared to the previous season which had reached record volumes. In addition, it was made worse because of the lack of rains
Fortunately the rains have just started. According to Juan Carlos Rivera Ortega, with the onset of the rains, the levels of water storage in the reservoirs will increase and make irrigation possible again. Irrigation directly influences the growth of mangoes and enables them to reach the appropriate sizes for the international market.
This will reactivate exports and compensate for the losses made earlier in the season. At the start of the 2020/21 season, export estimates were for 200,000 tonnes. This volume remains relevant according to APEM which estimates that the demand will be maintained because of the health crisis which requires to stay at home leading to more meals at home and a greater concern to consume healthy and good products for health. .
