El Niño could hit agricultural production
MD
El Niño in the Pacific is causing heavy rainfall in some areas and drought in others. The phenomenon is considered low risk for now but could develop with ranfall in the north and drought in the south.
The forecast is favourable for cotton and rice, but unfavorable for mangoes, grapes, asparagus. Drought is worrying Peruvian producers andt they predict a reduction in agricultural production. Depending on the degree of drought reduced production could reach 20-30%.
El Niño climatic phenomenon interacts with the Pacific ocean and affects Peru in particular. The ENFEN (Estudio Nacional del El Niño Phenomenon) and SENAMHI (Servicio Nacional de Meteorología Hidrología e) publish regular newsletters.
