The visit sought to reinforce bilateral cooperation as Thailand reviews blueberry import protocols across major supplying countries.
A delegation of inspectors from Thailand’s Department of Agriculture conducted a technical visit to Chile from 12 to 16 January to review and update the phytosanitary protocol governing fresh blueberry exports to the Southeast Asian country.
The mission aimed to strengthen bilateral cooperation and ensure that Chile’s blueberry shipments meet Thailand’s plant health standards. The visit was part of Thailand’s broader effort to revise import protocols not only in Chile but in other key exporting nations as well.
Miguel Canala-Echeverría, general manager of Frutas de Chile, described the exchange as “a crucial step to guarantee phytosanitary security for shipments and confidence for both Thai authorities and consumers.” He added that inspectors were positively impressed by the technology and strict compliance observed in Chile’s blueberry industry.
Julia Pinto, technical manager of the Chilean Blueberry Committee, highlighted the importance of showcasing Chile’s traceability and food safety systems, saying that this transparency reassures importing countries about the reliability of Chilean practices.
During the visit, the Thai delegation toured major blueberry production regions, including Ñuble and Biobío, visited packing facilities, and observed certification procedures at the Port of Valparaíso alongside officials from Chile’s Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG).
Chile’s blueberries currently enter the Thai market without issues, and industry representatives expect continued access under the updated protocol once it is finalised.
