The proposal introduces clearer rules for materials and processes used to protect food quality during storage and transport.
India has notified the World Trade Organization of proposed new definitions for food packaging materials and processes as part of updates to its national food safety regulations, according to a report from the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS).
The draft changes aim to clarify terminology used in food packaging legislation, including definitions for food contact materials, modified atmosphere packaging and aseptic packaging. The proposal also introduces a definition for non-intentionally added substances, referring to impurities or by-products that may be present in packaging materials.
Authorities said clearer definitions are intended to strengthen oversight of packaging safety and ensure consistent interpretation of standards across the food supply chain. The updated framework would apply to manufacturers, importers and food businesses using packaging materials that come into contact with food.
For the fresh produce sector, the proposed definitions are particularly relevant for exporters and packers using technologies designed to maintain product quality and shelf life during storage and transport. The notification opens a consultation period before the measures are finalised.
