The consumption of F&V in the EU countries is far from reaching the recommendations of WHO, the World Health Organization which advocates for adults 400 g of F&V, or 5 servings per day.
EUROSTAT, the European Statistics Service, has published the results of the EU population survey on its consumption of Fruits & Vegetables.
In 2017, about 1 in 4 (27%) ate fruit at least 2 times a day; 37% reported eating fruit once a day and 36% reported less frequent consumption or zero consumption in a typical week.
Among EU Member States, daily fruit consumption was most widespread in Italy (85% of the population) and Portugal (81%). On the other hand, in 3 other states, less than 40% of the population consumed fruit daily: Latvia (35%), Bulgaria and Lithuania (37%).
With regard to vegetable consumption, only 23% of the population ate vegetables at least twice a day and 40% ate them once a day.
By states, Ireland and Belgium have the highest proportion of the population that ate vegetables at least once a day (84% in both cases). While in most other states, 50% to 80% of the population reported eating vegetables daily, the proportion was below 50% in 5 states: Hungary (30%), Romania (41%), Latvia ( 44%), Lithuania and Bulgaria (both 45%).
