The state of Queensland accounts for around 40% of Australia's pineapple production. But this year an unprecedented surplus of pineapples is recorded following unprecedented early ripening.
The state of Queensland accounts for around 40% of Australia's pineapple production. This year, a series of meteorological events never seen in 50 years caused an unprecedented "natural flowering". Normally, "natural flowering" accounts for only 10% of annual pineapple crops. Whereas for the crops of this year (2022-23), it is 70% of the crops which flowered early and all together.
This early ripening leads to abundant production and with the approach of the Christmas and New Year holidays, the sector calls on Australian consumers to buy 1 or 2 pineapples to help producers. "They have more vitamin C than oranges and if everyone in Australia only bought one pineapple each, we wouldn't have a problem," said pineapple grower John Cranny.
