Despite high prices, tomatoes and strawberries recorded good sales volumes on the French market over the past year. In 2007, the French bought more tomatoes than in the previous two years, while the average price had never been so high (2.14 euros/kg). The same happened with strawberries as their price has only increased since 2004 to reach 4.30 euros/kg.
With a range of products, ranging from round tomatoes to cherry tomatoes, passing through cocktail tomato or classic tomato varieties, each type of product appeals to different consumers.
More than one third of tomatoes (35.5%) and strawberries (38.2%) sold in France are channelled through hypermarkets, while 20% through supermarkets and 10% in hypermarkets.
Despite these good results, it is worth highlighting that about 30% of French households did not buy strawberries in 2007 (6% in the case of tomatoes) and that young people consume fewer quantities of both products.
