A series of late-January promotions reflects shifting seasonal supply and regional produce focus.
The Seika wholesale market, Japan’s regulated central wholesale system for fruit and vegetables that supplies professional buyers nationwide, has released its schedule for the second half of January, outlining a series of regional promotions focused on seasonal produce. Citrus and strawberries dominate activity.
On 19 January, producers from Ehime Prefecture highlighted setoka citrus. Citrus remains in focus until 26 January, with mid- to late-season varieties including iyokan, dekopon and additional setoka volumes scheduled.
Strawberries are set to feature on 23 January, reflecting peak winter availability. Strawberries will also form part of a mixed produce promotion on 30 January, alongside lettuce, broccoli and kiwi.
On 27 January, Wakayama Prefecture is scheduled to showcase kiwi fruit and hassaku citrus. The programme concludes on 31 January with a vegetable-focused promotion from Toyohashi, featuring cabbage, mini tomatoes, daikon radish and oba (perilla).
