The Valencian hypermarket chain Family Cash, with 44 points of sale in Spain and Andorra, has launched the campaign 'A Family united against waste' with which it aims to save the equivalent of almost 3 million meals from the garbage.
Thus, the company has signed a strategic alliance with Comerso Iberia, a company specialized in the management of food and non-food surplus, with the aim of reducing waste after last Thursday's approval in Congress of the Food Waste and Loss Prevention Act. A regulation that will force supermarkets, hypermarkets and other actors of the large food distribution to implement concrete measures to reduce waste by promoting the donation of products suitable for consumption to social entities.
1.3 million tons to be saved
According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, around 1.3 billion kilos of food fit for consumption are wasted annually in Spain, which represents a total of 31 kilos per person per year.
In the words of the general manager of Family Cash, José Canet, this agreement highlights the "urgency" that existed to legislate on an issue that will also "have a social background and that will allow numerous associations to benefit from the second life of food that meets all the guarantees for consumption".
Sustainable commitment by bringing forward the law
Regarding the implementation of the project, he assured that Family Cash has anticipated the approval of the Law, and that is why the company has been working for almost a year "on the fine-tuning, establishing new processes and raising awareness among all our professionals". For his part, Juan Ángel Martín, director of Comerso Iberia, adds that being able to collaborate with companies like Family Cash, committed to sustainability and the circular economy, "is a big step towards a more responsible distribution model". With this initiative, Family Cash reinforces its commitment to sustainability and social economy, promoting a more conscious and responsible consumption model.
