Despite the logistical problems at the start of the 2021/22 season, the volume of exported South African grapes is almost similar to that of the previous year, according to data from SATI (South African Tablegrape Industry) data.
According to SATI (South African Tablegrape Industry) data, for the 2021/22 season and as of week 07, grape exports total 45.712 million boxes (4.5 kg). That is a volume almost similar to the 45.904 million boxes exported on the same date for the 2020/21 season and despite a slower start this season caused by the logistical problems experienced by the country.
SATI data indicates that shipments to the EU were slightly lower than the previous year, at 24.7 million boxes compared to 25.9 million. Shipments to the UK were also slightly lower than the previous year with 9.8 million boxes compared to 10.4 million.
On the contrary, an increase was recorded for shipments to Canada with 3.3 million boxes (2.7 million the previous year), to the Middle East with 2.5 million boxes (1.9 million l previous year) and to Southeast Asia with 2 million boxes (1.8 million the previous year) .
While some regions of the country have finished their season, other regions are beginning to reach their peak period. Fruit availability in these regions is good and fruit quality is also excellent.
