Bananas are rich in iron to fight against nutritional deficiencies of India's mostly vegetarian population.
Common in India because the majority of the population is vegetarian, iron deficiency is a problem for all developing countries.
This is the first project of its kind that India began with another country. Queensland University of Technology has signed an agreement with the Indian Department of Biotechnology with the objective of developing new varieties
of bananas that will help fight against iron deficiency in India.
Under the project, Australian scientists will develop iron-rich bananas and then transfer the technology to India. The development phase should last four years.
