The conflict in Ukraine has many repercussions on the world fruit and vegetable market. As for bananas, fruit destined for Russia and Ukraine that cannot reach its destination is diverted to other ports. This surplus volume is likely to impact the price on the European market.
According to the media RFI, Russia and Ukraine consume about 2 million boxes of bananas every week. The closure of Ukrainian ports and the risk of payment default on the Russian market forced the diversion of ships, whose initial destination was Ukraine, to Turkey and Romania.
Some industry analysts point out that banana production can hardly adapt to a sudden drop in demand and that in countries where bananas are imported, there will quickly be a surplus. Surplus which risks impacting the price of bananas throughout the European market and further weakening European banana producers (French West Indies, Canary Islands, Madeira).
