With over 500,000 Vietnamese living in Japan and a population of 120 million, the market offers strong potential.
Japanese companies are showing strong interest in importing Vietnamese lychees, according to Ta Duc Minh, Trade Counselor of Vietnam in Japan. During a recent visit to a local newspaper, Minh confirmed that many firms had already inquired about harvest timing and shipping details. Japan, known for its strict import standards, values high-quality tropical fruits such as lychees, Cat Chu mangoes, and pomelos.
Vietnam’s lychee exports to Japan faced setbacks last year due to low yields and high prices, but this season looks more promising. Over 19,000 hectares across 469 growing areas and 55 packing facilities are ready for export, with output expected to rise 30% from 2024. Minh stressed the importance of investing in post-harvest technologies, especially cold preservation, to meet Japan’s quality expectations.
He also encouraged Vietnamese businesses to focus not only on fresh fruit but also on processed products like dried mangoes to meet year-round demand. Beyond product quality, branding and packaging tailored to Japanese consumers will be key to success. With over 500,000 Vietnamese living in Japan and a population of 120 million, the market offers strong potential. As Vietnam enters peak harvest season, early coordination with Japanese importers is already underway.
