A 1st export for pineapple producers in the Horqueta district.
More than 100 pineapple growers from the Horqueta district, Paraguay, will export the first shipment of pineapples for marketing in Argentina.
For Rodrigo Gonzalez, president of Senave (Servicio Nacional de Calidad y Sanidad Vegetal y de Semillas) this is a new opportunity for the pineapple sector, which has very good growth prospects.
Until now, national production has stagnated and large volumes were imported from Brazil, but this year national production has managed to cover local consumption and even to export. According to Rodrigo Gonzalez in September 19,600 kilos were exported and in October 60,200 kilos.
In the case of pineapple exported to Argentina, health requirements are harmonized at MERCOSUR level. The process of exporting fruit to another MERCOSUR member country does not require requirements such as phytosanitary certification.
Export represents a great challenge in terms of the quality and safety of the fruit. Another challenge for the productive sector is to increase the productivity of pineapples. Improving quality will require investments in technologies and irrigation systems. Senave stressed that support is given so that producers can invest in these systems.
