Banana growers in Jamaica will receive much need aid from the European Union.
The European Union (EU) has signed a support agreement with the Jamaican government worth US$630m (€425m), in order to provide assistance to the countrys banana growers.
Farmers hit by Hurricane Dean last August will be given US$222m (€150m) in aid, which will include the distribution of fertiliser, fungicides and orchard oil. The remainder will be used to fund a rural diversification programme in the six traditional banana-growing parishes, in order to lessen the dependence on bananas and stimulate economic growth.
Projects such as greenhouse vegetable cultivation are also being considered, according to agriculture minister Christopher Tufton.
