Cherry exports falling by 27%

Chile registered a sharp decline in exports of cherries: ASOEX (Asociación de Exportadores de Frutas de Chile) announced a reduction of 27.3% in exports of cherries. The 2012/13 season ended with 51,900 tons exported.
Adverse weather conditions during the critical phases (pollination, flowering, veraison) led to delays in collecting and lower volumes.
Asia is still the main export market, with a share of 70.2%, but down 16.7% compared to 2011/12. China alone accounts for 49.5% of all Chilean exports. Shipments to the U.S. fell by 48.4% to 8,000 tons, while exports to Europe fell by 48.9% to a total of 3,000 tons, and to Latin America decreased by 30.1% to 4,000 tons.
