Fruit and Vegetables Production
United Arab Emirates
Monday 23 April 2007
Agricultural production-centred largely in the emirates of Ra's al-Khaymah and Al-Fujayrah, in the two exclaves of 'Ajman, and at Al-'Ayn-has expanded considerably through the increased use of wells and pumps to provide water for irrigation. However, agriculture contributes only a small fraction of gross domestic product (GDP) and employs less than one-tenth of the workforce. Dates remain UAE's major crop terms of area cultivared but the production of vegetables has increased, particularly in Abu Dhabi, and currently generates the most revenue. The same refers to growing of tomatoes, cucumbers, and aubergines. At present, the United Arab Emirates is nearly self-sufficient in fruit and vegetable production grains. The Arid Lands Research Centre at Al-'Ayn experiments with raising crops in a desert environment and Abu Dhabi Organics cultivate and harvest organic products in Garden City local Arab fruits and vegetables such as: apples, spinach, celery, cabbage and dried fruits.
What refers to fruit import, recently, was established a pineapple import chain to Dubai from India. The first containers of pineapples were shipped in December 2005 and the shippings were continued during the whole year 2006.
