Program of the development of organic strawberry farming which started last year put Piraqara city and Parana state on top of Brazil major organic strawberry producing regions.
Both the prefecture de Piraqara and Parana Enterprise for Technical Assistance and Rural Development (Emater) aided farmers in promotion of organic fruit farming and training in cultivation and processing of fruit.
In the end of 2006, farmers from Piraqara sold 37 tons of strawberry with mark A and gained approximately 31.000 Euro profit from the sale of organic fruit.
Roberto Nagase, one of the principal producers from the region, forecasts the sale of organic tomatoes and strawberries in 2007 on the level of 15 tons.
In opinion of Nagase, the support received from the prefecture helped him a lot in commercial negociations with final buyers of his products. Organic products from Piraqara are available in local commercial outlets and are often sold by local farmers.
