Chilean fresh fruit exports in January 2022 decreased by 3.5% in volume and increased by 1.9% in value compared to the same period in 2021. According to data from the Office of Agricultural Studies and Policies (Odepa), Chile exported 279.000 tons of fresh fruit for $1.255 million.
The rise in prices is explained by improvements in quality and caliber of the products, according to Jorge Valenzuela, the president of the Federation of Fruit Producers (Fedefruta).
Cherry led shipments with an increase of 11.4% in value, totaling $1,004 million and 190,000 tons (+0.5%).
Income from supplies to China constituted 91% of the total.
In second place was the blueberry, totaling 34,500 tons (-18%) for $164.7 million (-22%), and which was mainly destined for the United States, Holland and China.
They were followed by table grapes, with a total of 23.420 tons (-9%) for $38.25 million (-39%). The main destination was the United States (81% of the total). Valenzuela specified that this year is the debut of many new grape varieties that are showing their productive potential.
He underlined that the logistical situation was the main challenge of the month. In the port of Valparaíso - through which almost 60% of Chilean fruit is supplied - normally 4 ships are loaded weekly, a figure that today is 1.8.
