Production of lime in Peru suffers drastically

Lime producers are in a heap of trouble as job loss and failing demand of goods are taking effect. Because of the less demand of exporting limes, many producers are seeing prices drop. What used to cost 120US$ for a thousand limes is now just 20US$.
Mayor Juan Feijoo Navarrete says the situation is a direct result from the global economic crisis that is affecting trade in Peru. Lay offs in agricultural sector are rising because of less money to pay the workmen their 20-25 US$ daily.
The financial burden causes a strain for lime producers who must provide transportation, deposits and guarantees when selling their goods. On top of that, many lime producers do not have the means to find international markets for export.
