Chile and Indonesia sign lemon export agreement

A new export protocol clears the way for Chilean lemons to enter Indonesia, strengthening trade ties and boosting citrus sector growth.
Chilean fresh lemons have officially been cleared for export to Indonesia, following the signing of a phytosanitary protocol between both countries. The agreement was formalised in Santiago by Chile’s Minister of Agriculture, Esteban Valenzuela, and the head of Indonesia’s Quarantine Agency (IQA), Sahat M. Panggabean.
This protocol outlines the health and safety standards Chile must meet to ship lemons to the Southeast Asian nation — a key step in preventing pest introduction and ensuring product quality. It adds lemons to Chile’s list of already approved fruits for Indonesia, which includes blueberries, cherries, kiwis, apples, pears, and grapes.
The new access is expected to further boost citrus production in regions like Coquimbo, Valparaíso, and Metropolitana.
Officials from both countries emphasised the scientific and collaborative nature of the agreement and its role in deepening trade and cooperation between Chile and Southeast Asia.
