Projected growth in production and export for the 2022 Southern Hemisphere citrus season

The members of WCO (World Citrus Organisation) gathered on June 1, 2022 for the Annual General Meeting. The production and export forecasts for the next Southern Hemisphere citrus season 2022 were presented: citrus production is expected to increase by 4.85% compared to 2021 to reach 24,832,270 tons, exports are also expected to increase to 4,140,547 tonnes, 4.91% more than the previous season. Regarding processing, a total of 13,210,832 tons of citrus fruits are expected to be destined for the juice market, an increase of 8.32% compared to 2021.

 

 

 

"Citrus exports from the southern hemisphere continue to grow, particularly lemons and easy peelers. The southern hemisphere now represents 27% of the world citrus market" underlined Eric Imbert, CIRAD – Technical Secretariat of the WCO .

 

 

 

The WCO is led by a co-presidency of 2 full member countries. South Africa and Spain have co-chaired the organization since its inception. The General Assembly saw the re-election of the current WCO Co-Chairs for a second term: South Africa is represented by Citrus Growers' Association under the leadership of Justin Chadwick and Spain is represented by Ailimpo under the leadership of José Antonio Garcia Fernandez.
