Until now, India had only exported frozen jamun.
For the first time, fresh jamun (black plum) from India has been exported to London, UK, with the shipment sent from Karnataka last Thursday. Until now, India had only exported frozen jamun.
The export was organised by APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) under the Ministry of Commerce. The fruits were sourced directly from Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) to ensure better income for growers.
Exporter said farmers usually receive ₹50–60 per kg (about $0.58–$0.69/kg), but this export batch has earned them ₹110 per kg (≈ $1.27/kg).
The shipment was packed at an APEDA- and Plant Quarantine-approved packhouse set up by the Karnataka government’s horticulture department.
Karnataka is among India’s top producers of jamun, which is known for its health benefits and medicinal properties.
