According to Luis Miguel Vegas, general manager of the Peruvian Blueberry Producers Association (Proarándanos), Peru is the first blueberry exporter in the world.
In the 2020/2021 campaign, Peruvian blueberry shipments exceeded $ 1,000 million, totaling more than 150,000 tons, and for the 2021/2022 campaign the export volume is projected to increase by 30%.
Vegas pointed out that Peru passed from 12,000 tons exported in 2015/2016 to more than 150,000 tons in 2020/2021.
In 2016, Peru had only 2,300 hectares cultivated with blueberries, while in 2020 they already reached 13,600 hectares, and at the end of this year they plan to achieve 15,000 productive hectares of this berry, which proves the professionalism of the Association's operations.
Besides, in 2016, Peru had 13 blueberry varieties destined for export, where the Biloxi variety stood out with 58% of participation of the total cultivated surface, however, at the end of 2020 the list counted with 46 varieties, remaining Biloxi as the most demanded one, but its share has been reduced to 39 percent of the total.
Vegas also mentioned the IBO Summit 2021, an event organized by Proarándanos and the International Blueberry Organization (IBO), which will be held virtually in Peru from 23 to 25 of August.
Industry suppliers, producers, importers, exporters, retail chains from 30 countries around the globe will participate.
With the motto “Together to be the Berry Best”, the event will offer exhibitions related to market, marketing, production, trends, health benefits, challenges of the sector, among others.
