Turkish figs for christmas
MLK
The dried fig is one of the key products of our Christmas tables.
As highlighted by the Chairman of Nut Council of the Union of Turkish Exporters, Osman Öz, Turkey is the largest producer and exporter of this product.
This season began under much better hope than the previous season, when many losses had been recorded. Since October 2, when the 2015-2016 season began, 29 000 tonnes of dried figs were exported for a value of $ 105 million. An increase of 20 percent in export was recorded compared to the previous season. In 2014-2015, Turkey had exported a total of 55,000 tons of figs for a value of $ 243 million.
E Mr. Öz said that 60,000 tons are exported annually on average, and about half are sold before the Christmas period. Dried figs are a product enjoyed by American and European consumers, because of its energy virtues but also its cultural and religious connotations, he adds.
The major importing countries are Germany, Italy and France, with respectively 4400 tons, 3090 tons and 3082 tons exported. The United States, meanwhile, imported some 2,500 tonnes.China is a destination that is growing from one year to the other with 1,500 tons of dried figs exported so far.
Mr. Öz said that overall we can say that global consumption of figs is increasing.
