The laboratories of the Agricultural and Livestock Service of Chile (SAG) confirmed the presence of the strawberry nematode (Aphelenchoides fragariae) in plantations in the center-south of the country. It is a plague that was not present in Chile before.
Due to this, the Ministry of Agriculture declared an agricultural emergency, a measure that will allow the expeditious management of resources to help the affected producers, who are mainly small producers from Melipilla, San Pedro, Pelluhue, Litueche and Chanco.
The national director of INDAP, Santiago Rojas, stressed that they are working with agricultural services to deal with this emergency. In the same way, MINAGRI joined forces with INIA, whose organization will support monitoring through its laboratories in the affected areas and will carry out a study of the efficacy of molecules for the control of said plague, supported by the Agrarian Innovation Foundation (FIA).
In turn, the Ministry of Agriculture asks producers to file a complaint at the nearest SAG office or send an email to oficina.informaciones@sag.gob.cl in case of suspicion of the presence of this nematode in their plantations.
