Argentina and Chile expect good results from cherry season
Argentina and Chile have optimistic forecasts for production and export.
In Argentina, in the region of Mendoza where nearly 75% of the production was affected by frost during the previous season, the situation this year is much better. Production should experience a strong recovery.
For the Mendoza region, Diego Anguilar, director of Cámara de Cerezas, said production expectations are excellent. After the severe frost last year when there was almost no harvest, this year the flowering has been good and there is a good amount of fruit.
With the increased production the export volume is expected to reach 6,000 tons. Due to lack of funding, exporters are unwilling to provide sanitary protocols that would allow entry into Chinese and Thai markets. However England should remain the number one export destination, followed by countries such as Spain, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, India and Singapore.
In Chile, according to information published by ASOEX, for the current season 2020-2021 (from September 1 to October 26, 2020) the country shipped 15,375,013 boxes of fresh fruit to various markets around the world, or 2.85% of more than the same date of the previous year.
The cherry season has just started, and so far 481 boxes have already been sent to China where the fruits have aroused great interest. Chile is China's main supplier of fresh cherries, especially during the Chinese New Year, which will be celebrated on February 21, 2021.
During the 2019-2020 season, Chile sent 228,586 tonnes of cherries to the world, an increase of 27% compared to the previous period. Of this volume, 207,352 tonnes were destined for China.
