Imports of fresh fruit and vegetables have strongly increased in Spain. Apple is now the most demanded product on the Spanish market (164,123 tons, +25%), followed by citrus fruits (114,616 tons, +45%) and bananas (107,229 tons, +24%). According to official data from the Customs’ general directorate (processed by the Spanish Federation of fruit and veg producers’ association FEPEX), fruit imports totalled 793,647 tons for 619 million euro value, both improving by 28%.
On the whole, an increase by 19% of imported volumes (for 1.6 million tons total) and by 29% in terms of value (for 997 million euro) during the period January-August 2007 compared to the same period 2006.
Imports’ average price has increased by 8% (0.62 euro per kilo) due to the rise of vegetable price by 18%. According to FEPEX, the volumes of imported vegetable has amounted so far 809,654 tons (+11%), for 378.5 million value (+32%). With 485,999 tons, the main imported vegetable is the potato, which however registered a reduction by 6%.
It is worth highlighting in particular the increase of onions’ imports, for a total volume of 58,861 (+74%) in the mentioned period, that is 26.6 millions value (+143%). Also Spanish imports of tomatoes have grown relevantly, mainly in August from Portugal destined to processing.
The great development of imports both in terms of volumes and of value - FEPEX concludes - is in contradiction with Spanish exports’ stable levels in the same period January-August 2007, when an increase by only 1% was registered in value, compared to an equal drop in volume.
