Exceptionally high temperatures and lack of water have affected mango production, which is expected to drop by 50% according to Pakistani professionals.
Pakistan has just experienced an extreme heat wave, with temperatures exceeding 50°C (122°F) in some areas. This premature heat for the season and the lack of water have serious consequences on agricultural production and in particular on the production of mangoes.
"The heat at the time of the mango trees' flowering has seriously affected production," said Waheed Ahmed, director of PFVA, the Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters and Merchants Association, who estimates that the country will face a 50% drop in its mango production.
Pakistan is the 5th world producer of mangoes after India, China, Thailand and Indonesia. The average mango production is around 1.8 million tonnes but this year this production should be halved. The export objectives are also modified and the volume should reach only 125,000 tonnes this year.
