Chilean avocado exports to the US are expected to fall in 2008 as a result of both heavy snows earlier this year and a predicted increase in competition from Mexico.
Although avocado production is forecast to continue growing in the coming years as a large number of orchards enter their most productive stage, the unexpectedly cold winter seen in the region during July will affect next year's output, according to the USDA.
Competition for market share is also expected to increase from Mexican exporters, with the country's avocado producers expected to shortly gain duty free access to all 50 US states. The USDA said that the US received 64 per cent of Chile's avocado exports in 2006.
