Singapore imports over 90% of its food. SFA (Singapore Food Agency) controls imported products to ensure that these products meet standards. According to the agency 87.2% of imported fruits and vegetables were compliant in 2019.
SFA carried out 3825 checks, from April to December 2019, on fruit and vegetables. For the agency 491 products failed, which means that 87.2% of the products met the standards. The failures were due to exceeding the authorized limits, whether microbiologically, chemically or for pesticide residues.
Imported fruits and vegetables remain the category with the highest percentage of non-conformities in testing in 2019, according to Singapore authorities.
For food products that fail tests, SFA rejects shipments and requires importers to resolve the issue with their overseas suppliers.
