The fruit and vegetable sector is an important one for Italian economy: the 2007 sales proceeds amounted to 22.8 bln euros (+1,1% over 2006), with a total production of 23,8 mln tons of fruit and vegetables: 14,6 of vegetables
(-3,87%), 5,9 of fruit (-0,13%) and 3,4 of citrus fruit
(-2,80%). Volumes registered 2,8% decrease because of consumptions declining, overproduction and disadvantageous climatic conditions. These results have been estimated by Lead, study and Observatory of Cesena Fair, and by Aneioa (National Association of Importers and Exporters of Fruits, Vegetables and Citrus Fruits), based on Ismea and Istat’s data. The occasion for the releasing has been the presentation of the 25th edition of Macfrut, an Italian exhibition dedicated to fruit and vegetable, which will take place at the Cesena Fair on April 17-19.
2007 can be considered a positive year for the sector: imports and exports augmented, and the surplus had 38,9% increase, from 675,2 to 937,9 mln euros. Italy’s fruit export amounted 3.699.769 tons of fruit and vegetable (+5,3% over 2006) for 3,2 bln euros (+7,9%), while import amounted 2.811.288 tons (+1,4%) for 2,3 bln euros (-1,1%).
The main products in the fruit field went through a favourable period, especially table grapes, kiwis and pears, since the market rewarded national products. Fresh fruits are the most exported Italian products, with +6,7% in volumes and +10,6% in value. Legumes and vegetables are more exported than in 2006 as well (+7,4% in volumes), with 4% value increase. Citrus fruits, which Italy import from Spain (+14,7%), and tropical fruits are less imported
(-5,9% and -13,4%).
Italian families’ consumptions of fruit and vegetable registered 0,5% increase in volume in 2007, with about 46.000 tons more, while in 2006 it was +3%. Lifestyle’s changes and outside meals’ increase have been the main reasons for this decrease. The average consumption of fresh or deep-frozen fruit and vegetables for each family is about 391 kilos per year.
