Catalonia's not much affected by crop decline in stone fruit production
Spain
Sunday 16 September 2007
Catalonia has not been one of the areas most affected by the crop decline. When comparing data from 2006, peach production will rise by 4% amounting to 143,200 tons, nectarine by 7 % totalling 98,000 tons and pavia peach production will drop by 17% settling at 75,400 tons. Lleida, specifically, will release 82,300 tons of nectarine onto the market (9% more than last season), 108,900 tons of peach (8% more) and pavia peach will fall by 17% amounting to 71,000 tons. The rises in 2006 for peach and nectarine are due to younger plantations, which are now beginning to yield, and the drop in pavia peach production is due to the removal of trees.
The traditional crops in the area, apple and pear have been replaced over the years by stone fruit which has taken over in terms of volume and turnover. Around 340,000 tons were put on the market in 2005, a year of spectacular progress in comparison to 2004.
Cherry production has also grown significantly in this region. In relative terms, between 2004 and 2005 production of this fruit practically doubled rising from 7,000 tons to almost 13,000. The same is true for plum production which from 2004-2005 rose from 7,104 tons to 9,962 tons.
