Pear production and exports drop 5% in the campaign 2021/22
VU
The Argentine pear production for the campaign 2021/22 is estimated at 584.250 tons, which is 5% lower than in the previous campaign due to unfavorable weather conditions, according to the GAIN report from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The main pear varieties produced in Argentina are William’s, Packham’s Triumph, Beurre D’Anjou, Abate Fetel, Red Bartlett, and Beurre Bosc, according to SENASA.
Exports
Fresh pear exports in the campaign 2021/22 are estimated at 332.500 tons, which is also 5% lower from the previous year, due to smaller production.
During the first part of the campaign, Argentine pear exports are destined mainly to the European Union and the United States, while in the latter part of the campaign, supplies are oriented toward Mercosur countries (mainly to Brazil) and other Latin American countries. Until the beginning of the current year Russia used to be the second largest importer of Argentine pears (20% of total) however shipments to this country were canceled due to the war with Ukraine.
Worth mentioning that in the 2020/21 season, production of said fruit reached 615.000 tons, 350.000 tons of which were exported, while in the 2019/20 season the volume produced totaled 640.000 tons, and exports reached 340.000 tons.
