Hail Strikes Three Times Pear Orchards        

The region which cultivates the best pears of Turkey was devastated by hail.

Pear orchards in Bursa in north-west of Turkey were hit by hail three times in 45 days. The called “Deveci” pear is a well famous variety mainly grown in this region.

Farmers had a loss of 120 million liras (1 Euro= appr. 3 TL) while 60.000 tons pears go to waste by the disaster. On the other hand orchard owners stated that if the pears with hail impacts are not collected in time this can cause fire blight disease. Producers want experts from the government to quantify the damages and help to build a net system.

Pear exports are expected to be affected by this event.
