Peruvian asparagus expands in Europe despite price pressure
VU
Peru has increased asparagus exports to Europe by 49% in the first 5 months of 2025.
Peru continues as the world’s second-largest exporter of asparagus, following Mexico. While the United States remains its top market due to strong demand and limited domestic supply, Europe offers a more complex challenge. Consumption is high, but local production in countries like Spain, Italy, and Greece during March to May creates stiff seasonal competition and pushes prices down.
Peru’s advantage lies in its ability to fill market gaps once the European harvest ends. Success depends on accurate timing, logistical precision, and a strong understanding of local crop cycles, pricing patterns, and consumer behaviour. Exporters also require access to real-time market data and institutional support to make agile decisions.
According to Peruvian media, from January to May 2025, Peru exported 13,630 tonnes of asparagus to Europe — a 49% increase over the same period last year. However, this growth came with an average price drop to US$ 3.83 per kilo, mainly due to overlapping with European supply. As the year progresses and local availability declines, prices are expected to recover, offering better conditions for Peruvian exporters.
To sustain its position, Peru must move beyond seasonal gaps. The focus should include value-added products, diversification into new markets, and stronger public-private collaboration. Strategic planning and access to reliable information will be key to keeping Peruvian asparagus competitive and relevant in demanding global markets.
