New mandarin variety with higher brix and longer shelf life
VU
The SweetCott is a new mandarin variety developed by Les Domaines. Les Domaines has a rich history of delivering successful fruit varieties, notably the Nadorcott, which has been celebrated for its exceptional taste and quality in markets worldwide. In this interview, Fructidor chats with Kenza Ouali, Les Domaines Marketing Manager, who explains what makes this variety special, and how producers and retailers would benefit from it.
Fructidor: How does SweetCott differ from other varieties, particularly the renowned Nadorcott?
Kenza Ouali: SweetCott is our next level of delight for consumers, producers, and retailers. For consumers, we've focused on delivering an unparalleled taste experience. SweetCott boasts incredibly high levels of brix, indicating its sweetness, with levels surpassing leading varieties by 2 degrees. Additionally, its aroma is unique and enticing, while its juiciness sets it apart with a 20% higher juice content comparing to leading varieties. Furthermore, the fruit is virtually seedless, offering a hassle-free eating experience. It has an imposing size and strength, making it resistant to damage during handling and transportation. Additionally, its acidity levels contribute to its longevity, allowing it to be stored for up to eight weeks after picking, extending its consumption period until the end of May. This longer shelf life reduces pressure on retailers to sell quickly and ensures consumers get a quality product.
Fructidor: How about your strategy for engaging retailers?
Kenza Ouali: For retailers, SweetCott presents a compelling opportunity. Its exceptional taste and long shelf life make it an easy sell, even after the season ends. Retailers appreciate products that not only taste great but also have a longer selling window. By offering SweetCott, retailers can attract customers seeking premium quality fruits and capitalize on its popularity.
Fructidor: How does the fruit benefit producers and retailers?
Kenza Ouali: For producers, its high productivity is a major boon. Even young trees can yield up to 35 tons per hectare, and we anticipate this to increase to 45-50 tons per hectare within five years. Furthermore, its natural resistance to diseases and strong fruit quality simplifies field management and post-harvest processes. For retailers, the extended shelf life and consistent quality minimize waste and ensure a reliable supply, boosting customer satisfaction.
Fructidor: What do you envision for its future in the market?
Kenza Ouali: We believe SweetCott has the potential to become a beloved staple in households and stores worldwide. Its exceptional taste, seedlessness, and long shelf life make it a highly desirable option for consumers and retailers alike. We're committed to continuing our efforts to educate and engage with consumers, ensuring they understand and appreciate the unique qualities of SweetCott. Ultimately, we're confident that SweetCott will bring a new era of delights to consumers, producers, and retailers.
