A very difficult season that ends with much less production than expected a few months ago.
According to the latest USDA publication, the US Department of Agriculture, Florida's oranges production is down 40% from last September's forecast.
Last September, before devastating Hurricane Irma, USDA crop forecasts estimated Florida production at 68-75 million 90-pound cartons (40.8 kg). The USDA's end-of-season publication reports a total production of oranges this year of 44.95 million boxes. That's down 40% from pre-hurricane forecasts.
This orange harvest is the lowest in 75 years. The citrus sector is still recovering from the unprecedented damage of hurricane Irma and hopes for a slower start to the season next fall.
