Spanish Girona apple promoted on EU trains

Spain
Sunday 27 April 2008

The Spanish Agricultural department has recently started a promotional campaign of PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) Girona apples on long-way trains directed from Barcelona to Milan, Paris and Zurich.
Until the 30th of April, passengers will have the possibility to freely taste these apples in the restaurant wagon of such trains. At the same time, promotional leaflets will be distributed explaining what PGI Girona apple is.
This campaign is being carried out through the agreement between the public company Catalunya’s Export Promotion (Prodeca) and the firm Elipsos, formed by the railway companies Renfe and SNCF.
The Protected Geographical Indication is granted to apples grown with integrated farming methods, being harvested at the most appropriate ripe time with the greatest care and promptness possible. The production area is north Catalunya region (not far from Barcelona), comprising the municipalities of Selva, Baix Empordà, Alt Empordà, Girona and Pla de l´Estany. The special climatic conditions of this area give the apples their particular features.
The varieties included among the PGI Girona apples are the Golden, Red Delicious, Gala and Granny Smith.
