Mauritius plans to export 2,500 tonnes of fruit and vegetables and provides an increase of 5 to 10% of the volumes shipped to Russia.
The production of fruits and vegetables has averaged around 10 000 tonnes per year , the country plans to export 2,500 tons. In 2010 the island only exported 1,737 tons of fruit and vegetables. Since then, many sugarcane growers have turned to growing fruits including pineapple.
Production is bullish and will continue to increase in the coming years .The main export markets of the island are France ( 67.8%) , the Netherlands (11.1% ), followed by Switzerland, Belgium and the UK. Most exported products are : 'Victoria' pineapple, litchi, passion fruit , pepper, breadfruit , avocado and papaya. Professionals believe that there is an opportunity to increase exports to the Russian market .
