In New Zealand, for the third consecutive year, the kiwi is at the top of the country's export list with nZ $1.86 billion ($1.2 billion).
According to Fresh Facts, published by Plant and Food Research, horticultural exports have tripled in the last 20 years, from NZ $ 1.7 billion to NZ $ 5.5 billion ($ 3.5 billion) for the year ended 30 June 2018. They now account for almost 10% of New Zealand's total merchandise exports.
More than a third (34%) of export earnings come from the kiwi with NZ $ 1.86 billion, up from the NZ $1.66 billion achieved in 2017.
Exports of apples in 2018 reached NZ $ 732.9 million ( $ 477.7 million), up from NZ $ 691 million in 2017. Potato exports totaled NZ $ 115 million ($ 74.9 million) , up from NZ $ 93.8 million in 2017.
The other exports star is wine, which contributed at 31% of total turnover. The horticultural sector is valued at NZ $ 9.2 billion and the NZ $ 10 billion target by 2020 is on track.
