Drought could have a negative impact on fruit productivity in Chile (Photos: fedefruta cl).
In Chile, the drought that has affected several parts of the country could result in smaller fruits and thus lower productivity.
In an interview with El Diario de Cooperativa, Jorge Valenzuela, president of Fedefruta (Federación de Productores de la Fruta de Chile), the association of fruit producers in Chile, spoke about the drought that affected several regions of the country and believes that certain fruits could be affected:
"The impact will depend on the fruit and the locality. I think the first fruits, like the first cherries, should not be affected, but we are doing studies, assessing the water levels of rivers, to see what will happen from January to March, for other fruits (for example kiwi, apple and grape). These are the ones who could be affected "
The fruit sizes may be smaller and of course this will result in lower productivity.
