Moroccan citrus exports did not reach expectation and forecasts show a decline of 10%.
Moroccan citrus exports are lower than expected this season. The citrus industry will not achieve its export forecasts of 570,000 tons this season after the 530,000 tons shipped in 2010/2011. The ASPAM (Association of Citrus Producers of Morocco) expects that only 500,000 tons will be exported this season.
The latest data show that 380,260 tons of citrus was exported through 5 March
2012. At the same time last year the figure was 424,570. The decrease of 10% and can not be brought back by the end of the season.
There are several reasons for this decline. The cold snap this winter has slowed fruit growth, resulting in lower ratings for some varieties, and caused damage to oranges. Export prices have fallen following much lower European demand.
