The Netherlands consolidates its position as a gateway to Europe for avocados from all over the world. In 2020, Dutch avocado imports grew by 19% in volume and 15% in value.
The Netherlands is the 2nd largest importer of avocados in the world, behind the United States, and according to CBS-Statistics Netherlands data in 2020, avocado imports (including intra-EU imports) totaled 415 million kg. That is + 19% compared to 2019 (349 million kg). This is the first time that the value of avocado imports has exceeded 1 billion euros. The value increased by 15% from 0.92 billion EUR in 2019 to 1.06 billion EUR in 2020.
These avocado imports are mainly intended for export to other European countries such as Germany (26%) and France (19%). The internal market only absorbs around 9% of volumes.
The main point of entry is the port of Rotterdam. In 2020, Peru was the main supplier with 33% of the volume imported, followed by Chile with 13%, Colombia with 12%, South Africa with 9%, Mexico with 7% as well as Kenya with 7%.
Globally, the Netherlands is the 2nd largest avocado importer, after the United States (1,105 million kg) and the 1st non-producing exporting country.
